Alex Cora Opens Up About His Red Sox Future

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora addressed his future with the team beyond the 2023 season in an interview with the Boston Globe on Tuesday.

Cora, who led the Red Sox to a World Series championship in his first season as manager in 2018, said he is “committed” to the Red Sox and “excited” about the team’s future. However, he also acknowledged that the team’s performance in 2023 has been a disappointment.

“We play for championships,” Cora said. “And right now, we’re in last place in the American League East.”

Cora said he believes the Red Sox can turn things around in 2024, but that it will require some changes.

“Hopefully,” he explained, “we can improve the roster with some acquisitions and go for it next year.”

Cora also said that he is mindful of his age and that he doesn’t see himself managing for as long as some of his predecessors, such as Terry Francona and Tony La Russa.

“I’m 47, I turn 48 next week,” Cora said. “I don’t see myself like Tito and Tony to manage until 70 whatever.”

Despite his age, Cora said he is still passionate about managing and that he is excited about the challenge of leading the Red Sox back to the World Series.

“I love this place,” he said. “I love the Red Sox. I love the city of Boston. I love the fans. I’m committed to this.”

Cora’s contract with the Red Sox runs through the 2024 season. It is unclear whether the team will exercise his option for the 2025 season. However, Cora’s comments on Tuesday suggest that he is confident that he will be back in Boston for at least one more year.

The Red Sox have a lot of young talent, and Cora is confident that they can be a contender in 2024. However, the team will need to make some changes if they want to get back to the World Series. Cora is aware of this, and he is committed to making the necessary changes to get the Red Sox back on top.
