Heads Up, New England! Tornado Watch In Effect Until 8 P.M.

Just a heads up to my fellow New Englanders – buckle up for some potentially rough weather today! The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a tornado watch for parts of New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts, in effect until 8:00 p.M. EDT.

That means conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop, along with damaging winds, hail, and heavy rain. Here’s a quick breakdown of what you need to know:

  • Affected Areas: The watch encompasses all of New Hampshire, as well as western and southern Maine. In Massachusetts, the watch covers Worcester, Middlesex, Essex, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, and Berkshire counties.
  • Timing: The watch is in effect until 8:00 p.M. EDT this evening, Sunday, June 24th, 2024.
  • Threats: The main threats are tornadoes, with a 10% chance in parts of New Hampshire and central/western Massachusetts. Damaging winds exceeding 70 mph, hail the size of ping pong balls, and heavy rain are also possible.

Staying Safe During a Tornado Watch:

  • Stay Informed: Monitor weather updates closely on TV, radio, or the National Weather Service website [National Weather Service (.gov) website].
  • Be Prepared: Know where your nearest tornado shelter is located. If you don’t have a basement, identify an interior room on the lowest level of your building, away from windows and exterior walls.
  • Have a Plan: Discuss your tornado safety plan with your family and practice taking cover Drills are crucial, especially for children.
  • Stay Alert: Listen for tornado warnings, which are issued when a tornado is imminent or spotted. If you hear a warning, take shelter immediately!

Let’s stay weather-aware and keep each other safe, New England!
