Japan’s First Megaquake Warning: A Wake-Up Call

A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Kyushu, Japan, on Thursday sent shockwaves through the nation. But perhaps even more alarming was the subsequent announcement: Japan’s first-ever “megaquake caution.”  

This unprecedented warning from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) highlighted the very real possibility of a catastrophic earthquake in the near future. Experts have long predicted a massive earthquake at the Nankai Trough, a fault line that runs along the Pacific coast of Japan, and this latest temblor has only served to underscore the urgency of the situation.

What Does a Megaquake Mean?

A megaquake is a term used to describe an earthquake of magnitude 8 or higher, capable of causing widespread devastation. The JMA’s warning indicates a heightened risk of such an event in the coming days and weeks.
