Last-Minute Qualifier: Justin Thomas Earns Tour Championship Berth, While Jason Day's Season Ends on a Sour Note

In a dramatic turn of events at the BMW Championship, Justin Thomas secured his spot in the Tour Championship, the season-ending finale of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The Kentucky native qualified while en route home, a testament to his consistent performance throughout the season. Meanwhile, Jason Day’s hopes of making the Tour Championship were dashed by a late stumble in the final round.

Thomas, who began the final round outside the top 30 in FedEx Cup points, finished the tournament at four under par. His solid play, coupled with a crucial double bogey by Brian Harman on the 18th hole, propelled him into the top 30, securing his place in the prestigious event.

“It’s a surreal feeling,” Thomas said. “I was just trying to play my game and see what happened. To find out I’m in the Tour Championship while on a plane is pretty crazy.”

Day, who started the final round in a strong position to qualify, saw his chances evaporate with a double bogey on the 16th hole. Despite a birdie on the 18th, he finished just outside the top 30, ending his season on a disappointing note.

The Tour Championship will take place at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta from August 30 to September 2. The field will consist of the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings, with Patrick Cantlay currently leading the way.
