American singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter is known for her catchy tunes and relatable lyrics. But even the sweetest pop stars can’t escape a little criticism sometimes, as Carpenter recently discovered with her song “Espresso.”
Appearing on the notoriously spicy wing challenge show “Hot Ones,” Carpenter found herself facing the fiery wrath of the habanero hot sauce while also addressing some of the online buzz surrounding her “Espresso” lyrics.
For those unfamiliar with the drama, some fans interpreted a line in “Espresso” – “I like my girls like I like my coffee, hot and sweet” – as dismissive or exclusionary towards LGBTQ+ fans.
Carpenter, clearly flustered by both the hot wings and the conversation, tried to explain her perspective. She emphasized that the song was “meant to be a metaphor,” and that her music has “always been about inclusivity.”
While navigating the spice and the unexpected controversy, Carpenter managed to stay gracious and humorous throughout the interview. She even joked that the heat from the wings was “putting the fire out” of any remaining controversy.
