Sony Systems Breached by Ransomware Group: What Customers Need to Know
A ransomware group claims to have successfully breached the networks of Sony Group Corporation and is threatening to sell the data it stole from the Japanese tech giant.
The group, known as Ransomed.vc, posted a message on the clear and dark nets on September 23rd, claiming to have compromised all of Sony’s systems. The group said that Sony is unwilling to pay to get its data back, so it is being sold.
“We have successfully compromissed [sic] all of sony systems,” the group claimed. “We wont ransom them! we will sell the data. Due to Sony not wanting to pay. DATA IS FOR SALE.”
Ransomed.vc is a relatively new ransomware group, but it has already racked up an impressive number of victims, including the Hawaiian government and several large corporations.
Sony has not yet confirmed the breach, but it has said that it is aware of the claims and is investigating.
What does this mean for Sony customers?
It is too early to say what impact this breach may have on Sony customers. However, if the group’s claims are true, it is possible that customer data, such as names, addresses, and credit card numbers, may have been compromised.
Sony has said that it will be notifying customers if any of their personal information is found to have been compromised.
What should Sony customers do?
As a precaution, Sony customers should change their passwords for all of their online accounts, including their Sony account. They should also monitor their credit reports for any signs of unauthorized activity.
If you are a Sony customer, you should also be aware of phishing scams. Scammers may try to send you emails or text messages that appear to be from Sony, but are actually designed to steal your personal information. Be careful about clicking on links in emails or text messages from unknown senders.
What is ransomware?
Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts a victim’s files and then demands a ransom payment in exchange for the decryption key. If the victim does not pay the ransom, they will lose their files.
Ransomware attacks have become increasingly common in recent years. In 2021, ransomware attacks caused over $20 billion in damages worldwide.
How to protect yourself from ransomware
There are a number of things you can do to protect yourself from ransomware attacks:
- Keep your software up to date. Software updates often include security patches that can help protect your devices from known vulnerabilities.
- Use a strong antivirus program. An antivirus program can help to detect and remove malware from your devices.
- Be careful about what links you click on and what attachments you open. Phishing emails are one of the most common ways that ransomware is spread.
- Back up your files regularly. If you are infected with ransomware, you can restore your files from a backup if you have one.
If you think you may have been infected with ransomware, do not pay the ransom. Instead, contact your local law enforcement and a cybersecurity expert for assistance.
