UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman Sacked Over Accusations of Police Bias
UK Interior Minister Suella Braverman was fired on Monday, November 13, 2023, after she accused the London police of political bias in handling pro-Palestine demonstrators.
Braverman’s firing came after she published an article in The Times newspaper, without the approval of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, in which she accused the police of “playing favorites” when policing protests and claimed they largely ignored “pro-Palestinian mobs.”
Braverman’s accusations sparked widespread outrage, with many people accusing her of undermining public trust in the police. Police leaders also condemned her comments, saying they were “unfair and unfounded.”
In a statement, Sunak said that he had asked Braverman to resign because her comments were “damaging to public confidence in the police.” He also said that she had “failed to uphold the ministerial code.”
Braverman’s firing is a major blow to Sunak’s government, which has already been under pressure over a number of issues, including the cost of living crisis and the ongoing Brexit negotiations.
