The molecule in question is called trigonelline. This study, led by a team from Nestlé Research and the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine in Singapore, found that older adults with sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss) had lower levels of trigonelline.

Here’s how it might work: as we age, a cellular molecule called NAD+ declines. This drop is linked to reduced energy production in the mitochondria, the powerhouses of our cells. The study showed that providing trigonelline in pre-clinical models boosted NAD+ levels, which in turn, revved up mitochondrial activity and helped maintain muscle function.

While more research is needed, these findings are exciting. They offer a potential natural approach to combating sarcopenia, a condition that can significantly impact mobility and independence later in life.

The study focused on the effects of trigonelline itself, not necessarily the amount found in a typical cup of coffee. Different coffee beans and brewing methods can affect trigonelline content. Researchers are still figuring out the optimal dosage for muscle health benefits.
