Southern Nevada Health District Offering Free HIV Testing for National Coming Out Day

The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) is offering free HIV testing on National Coming Out Day, Wednesday, October 11, 2023, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Fremont Public Health Center, located at 2830 E. Fremont St., Las Vegas, NV 89104. Free condoms, in addition to information about PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) and medications to prevent HIV, will also be available.
National Coming Out Day is an annual observance on October 11 that celebrates and supports lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ+) people who have come out to their families, friends, and communities. It is also a day to raise awareness of the ongoing discrimination and violence faced by LGBTQ+ people.
The SNHD is offering free HIV testing on National Coming Out Day to highlight the importance of HIV testing and prevention, and to encourage LGBTQ+ people to get tested for HIV. HIV testing is recommended for everyone at least once in their lifetime, and more often for people who are at high risk of HIV infection.
HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system. If left untreated, HIV can lead to AIDS, which is a life-threatening condition. However, with early diagnosis and treatment, people with HIV can live long and healthy lives.
The SNHD offers free HIV testing at its Sexual Health Clinic on Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. HIV testing is also available at other locations in Southern Nevada, including The Center and Planned Parenthood.
