Tiger Tames Riviera (Mostly): Even a Shank Can't Spoil Woods' Solid Start at Genesis Invitational

Tiger Woods, the name synonymous with golf greatness, showed glimpses of his old magic at the Genesis Invitational this week, carding an opening-round 72 despite a wild shank on the final hole. While the shank might grab the headlines, it shouldn’t overshadow a largely positive return for the 15-time major champion.

Woods, still battling back from injuries, looked sharp early, striping drives down the fairways of the iconic Riviera Country Club. His putting, often a point of frustration in recent years, was dialed in, sinking clutch birdies on the 5th and 13th holes. The galleries, electric with anticipation, roared their approval with every impressive shot.

But even the greats aren’t immune to the occasional hiccup. On the par-4 18th, with a chance to finish under par, disaster struck. Woods’ normally reliable 8-iron shanked viciously right, disappearing into the eucalyptus trees. A double bogey loomed, threatening to sour the day’s good work.

However, Woods, ever the competitor, dug deep. He scrambled for a bogey, salvaging a respectable score and showcasing his never-say-die attitude. “It wasn’t the finish I wanted,” Woods admitted after the round, “but I’m happy with how I played overall. The body held up, and I felt good swinging the club.”

The 72 puts him in a tie for 24th place, well within striking distance of the leaders. While a championship charge might seem like a tall order, Woods’ presence alone electrifies the tournament. His fans, millions strong, will be glued to their screens, hoping to witness another chapter in the legend of Tiger Woods.
