Watch Out for Wheat! Aldi Recalls Macaroni Salad Due to Mislabeling

Who doesn’t love a delicious macaroni salad to brighten up a summer BBQ or picnic? But hold on, Aldi shoppers! If you recently grabbed a container of their deli macaroni salad, check your pantry before digging in. There’s been a recall on a specific batch due to a labeling error that could be dangerous for people with wheat allergies.

Here’s the scoop: Reser’s Fine Foods, the manufacturer of the Aldi deli macaroni salad, issued a recall after discovering a mislabeling issue. Apparently, the ingredients list on the bottom of some containers wasn’t for macaroni salad at all, but for coleslaw! This is a big deal because coleslaw doesn’t contain wheat, while macaroni salad typically does. For someone with a wheat allergy, unknowingly consuming the wrong salad could lead to anything from mild discomfort to a serious allergic reaction.

Thankfully, the recall seems contained to a single lot. The affected macaroni salad comes in 32-ounce containers and has an expiration date of June 3rd, 2024. If you live in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, or any of the other ten states listed on the recall notice [FDA link to the recall notice can be added here if you find it], double-check your Aldi macaroni salad.

Here’s what to do:

  • If you have the recalled macaroni salad:
    • Check the expiration date and lot number. If it matches the recall (June 3rd, 2024 expiration), don’t eat it!
    • The safest option is to throw it away.
    • Alternatively, you can return it to your local Aldi for a full refund.
  • If you’re unsure:
    • When in doubt, throw it out! It’s better to be safe than sorry, especially when allergies are involved.
    • You can also call Reser’s Fine Foods at 888-223-2127 for more information (Monday through Friday, 11 am to 8 pm Eastern Time).

Let’s spread the word and keep everyone safe this summer! By sharing this information with friends and family who shop at Aldi, we can help ensure nobody accidentally consumes the wrong salad.
